Advantages of disposable PPE for laboratories

In the case of work in a laboratory, the PPE or Personal Protective Equipment to be used must guarantee optimum hygiene and safety conditions, as the professional has to work with materials and components that can put his or her integrity at risk.

In a laboratory, very diverse operations are carried out, in which a wide variety of products with different characteristics and levels of danger are handled. It is in circumstances such as these that Personal Protective Equipment must be used, which must be adequate and effective against the risks that may arise.

Because of all this, disposable items are the most suitable to form part of our laboratory PPE. Thanks to their disposable nature, single-use PPE will always be in perfect condition to guarantee the hygiene and safety of the user, and will not require cleaning or disinfection after use, so it is also an economical option.

What to include in disposable laboratory PPE

When composing our Laboratory PPE, we must first think about the frequent tasks carried out and which parts of the body are exposed or involved in the process.

Thus, among the Personal Protective Equipment that we should have, we should not miss facial protection such as disposable masks and beard covers; protection for the upper extremities such as disposable gloves and sleeves; as well as general protective clothing, choosing disposable gowns, aprons or overalls (or a combination of them).

If we want to be extra cautious, we can always complement the aforementioned items with disposable slippers or shoe covers, in case the space where we work should not be contaminated with agents from outside that adhere to our footwear; or single-use caps, if we must avoid that the materials we work with run the risk of being contaminated by sweat or hair.

We should always bear in mind that, as it is disposable equipment, it should only be used once, and never be reused or prolonged in time. Otherwise, the functions for which it has been manufactured could be diminished.
